About

Elly Squire is the progeny of a Chiropractor and a Hairdresser and was born in a small coastal town in Western Australia. Both parents are very confused about how their daughter ended up like this but they are proud none the less, although they both think Fawlty Towers is funnier. Elly first showed an interest in performing when she joined the Dancemoves Dance Academy and put on her debut solo performance at age 6. Wiggling her hips and turning in circles (and only these moves for the duration) to her favourite song at the time “Phantom of the Opera” to a collective of parents stifling their laughter, Elly learnt the power of comedy. There was no stopping her.

Elly started performing burlesque as a hobby in 2007 when friend Melanie Bruyer founded Sugar Blue Burlesque in Perth, Western Australia where she first started to devis the insanity that is Clara Cupcakes. After deciding she needed a gimmick to stand out from the crowd, Elly taught herself to hula hoop from watching clips on YouTube, which became the precedent for her learning any new skill throughout her career. She drew inspiration from the vaudeville acts of the 1920s, the comedians of the silent film era and the jazz music she knew and loved. Combining authentic venacular jazz dance, circus, clowning and old fashioned sensibilities, she derived her own unique and quirky style of vaudeville. Elly has become a prominent artist in both the Australian comedy and burlesque communities.

Her skills includes training in clowning, circus, dance, improv, cabaret, burlesque, vaudeville and acts of complete stupidity. She likes to poke her finger in a lot of pies, cherry being her favourite. Her critically acclaimed debut solo show, “The Merchant of Whimsy”, was nominated for the prestigious Golden Gibbo award at the 2015 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and again in 2017 for “The Worst”. She is one of Australia’s premier vaudeville performers and creates show full of heartwarming good feelings, chaotic silliness and sneaky, sneaky feminism. Elly has previously been a principal performer and an artistic director of Sugar Blue Burlesque and a resident performer at the now defunct Burlesque Bar. She is a cast member of renowned improv troupe, The Big Hoo-Haa. Elly is now based in Melbourne as a solo artist.

Elly has a collection of souvenir scarves because she likes the idea of a city putting the things they are most proud of on an accessory. Her favourite is from Wisconsin. She also has two cats who are probably more internet famous than her but that’s okay because they do look really good in a scarf. Look!
